The Abegg Love Letters

To those who have been called, who are loved by God the Father and kept by Jesus Christ; mercy, peace and love be yours in abundance. -Jude 1:1

As Regional Leaders with United World Mission, we serve in Latin America to provide support & training to missionaries on the field. We work with Latin Partner Ministries that focus on everything from theological education to medical care, from children’s homes to retirement homes. Our goal is to come along side organizations & amplify their impact for good and the Gospel.

🌎 Season of Joy & Longing

Love Letters from the Abeggs:
"…to those who are called, beloved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ: May Mercy, Peace, and Love be multiplied to you." (Jude 1:1)
"Joy to the World"
and
"O Come Emmanuel…"
Some Christmas seasons I find it easy to marvel at, soak in and rejoice over Christ's Incarnation which initiated His earthly journey to the cross, His resurrection and ultimately our Salvation. During these times the hymn "Joy to theWorld" rolls effortlessly off my lips throughout the season of Advent. …However, during other Christmas seasons, this being one of them, I find myself living in the light of Christ's redemption yet longing, yearning for His return as I whisper the lyrics to "O Come, O Come Emmanuel":

"…O come, Thou Dayspring, from on high,
And cheer us by Thy drawing nigh;
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
And death's dark shadows put to flight.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel…"

I live, hope, rejoice and celebrate in Christ's accomplished mission of redemption, restoring our fellowship with God, instead of leaving us in our sin. Still, we live in both the "now and the not yet." The now of salvation & open fellowship with God and His Holy Spirit, in the midst of the not yet experiencing the physical presence of Christ our Lord and the end of sin's curse on creation such as the sickness and death our family has experienced over the past month. (Thank you to all who continue to intercede for Claudia. She continues healing, is enjoying time with our boys and we trust in the Lord's guidance over the coming weeks and months.) Ultimately, we look forward to the consummation of His Kingdom, the eventual death of death and a final end to all illness, tears and suffering of any kind!

I find a realistic, earthy, even gritty comfort in the words of "O Come Emmanuel" (God with us). A recognition of Sovereign God's incarnation in the infant Christ whom we celebrate, and the redemption of His sacrifice on the cross for our sins. But this hymn has a haunting longing that echoes throughout, a pulsating hope and anticipation, a leaning forward in His mercy, and looking towards that same infant's return as our conquering Lord to finalize His kingdom for all eternity. This is our eternal hope, and present "…peace that passes all understanding." (Phil. 4:7)

I pray that during this Advent season, you will experience both the JOY and PEACE that can only be found in our Savior, as well as the ANTICIPATION of His eternal Kingdom Come!
Prayer Requests from the Field:

On the field, please be praying for a few groups of leaders and projects we're working with in preparation of changes in the coming year. Concerning one project in particular please pray that we'd be able to form a functioning board to carry it through some important transitions which could potentially bless and assist multiple partner ministries and provide in various ways for future missionaries to the field.

Pray for the leadership team that I've mentioned in multiple newsletters would be able to work together well and provide the direction, care, vision and encouragement needed both in relation to our national partner ministries in seven different Central American and Caribbean Countries.

Pray for our family as we continue to walk through the grief and administrative needs following my mom's passing, and work (rest) towards Claudia's anticipated recuperation. All of this even as we lay plans for the coming year.

Thank you for your prayers, care and financial partnership as we wind down a very eventful year and look forward what the Lord has prepared for 2024!
Merry Christmas to you from the Abegg Family!
(Yeah, this pic is 8 years old but I still love it!)

🌎 Abegg Health Emergency & Prayer Request

Love Letters from the Abeggs:
"…to those who are called, beloved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ: May Mercy, Peace, and Love be multiplied to you." (Jude 1:1)
Prayer Request:
Claudia's Hospitalization & Health Needs
I mentioned in a previous newsletter how over the past few months Claudia has been battling fatigue and other symptoms. Since then, we've discovered that these are related to an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), that unfortunately hospitalized her last Sunday with labored breathing and "heart failure", which is different from a heart attack, but rather when the heart is working excessively hard yet failing to pump the necessary blood. Thankfully since her thyroid issue had already been diagnosed, the doctors had a good idea where to start, and by the end of the day we had a battery of tests in hand and an initial treatment underway. As part of this "thyroid storm", she was retaining water which caused significant swelling, and collected in her lungs adding further stress on her struggling heart. The medical staff did a fantastic job in caring for her during the next few days and she was released Tue. night to continue recovering at home.

Please pray for a full recovery as it will be a long process to balance her system due to the hormones her thyroid flooded into her organs, and then to adjust the necessary medications for the future.

Claudia is in good spirits, breathing and feeling significantly better, and we're thankful that the Lord made it clear she needed to get the hospital Sunday morning.  Though we're both tired, we're trusting in His hand in the midst of this challenging season.

Thank you so much for your prayers, please continue praying for the Lord's guidance and grace in this time!

Giving Tuesday to Abegg's Missionary Account
You've seen them before, our United World Mission missionaries in Central America and the Caribbean. Claudia and I are privileged to serve this group of people as they serve churches, orphanages, medical clinics, seminaries and many other national ministries throughout our region.

As you consider giving towards Gospel Centered Ministries this Giving Tuesday, consider assisting us in our year end campaign to prepare for the necessary travel and equipping of both UWM missionaries and emerging Church leaders throughout Central America and the Caribbean.

🌎 Giving Tue & Gospel Leadership in Latin America

Love Letters from the Abeggs:
"…to those who are called, beloved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ: May Mercy, Peace, and Love be multiplied to you." (Jude 1:1)
Giving Tuesday to Abegg's Missionary Account

Greetings Friends and Partners in the Gospel…

A Happy belated Thanksgiving to each of you!

We hope you had a joy-filled celebration in remembrance of God's goodness, care, and mercies in the midst of the challenges He allows into our lives.

For the first time in many years, and because of some of the trials mentioned in previous newsletters, we didn't have our traditional gathering at our home, but enjoyed a wonderful celebration at the home of dear friends from church, providing the fellowship we desperately need but without the work we simply couldn't manage this year.

As we close in on a New Year, we are kicking off a Year-End-Giving campaign tomorrow on Giving Tuesday!

Our goal is to raise an additional $10,000 in tax deductible donations by the end of the year to help with Regional Leadership Training, both for UWM leadership as well as Leadership Development and Discipleship for the many national partners we work with throughout Central America and the Caribbean.

Throughout the month of December, I'll keep you posted on the progress towards this goal, so if you're a regular donor and choose to include an additional gift, whether tomorrow on Giving Tuesday, or before the end of the year, please send me a note letting me know and I'll add it to the tally.

We offer a heartfelt THANK YOU for your ongoing prayers, intercession, and encouragement as we close off a difficult year, and look to our Lord for each step into 2024. Each one of you are truly an encouragement as we move ahead. We pray that you are blessed and encouraged as you prepare to celebrate Christ's incarnation in the coming weeks, and anticipate all our Lord has in the coming year!
